Choosing Forgiveness “That young man, I forgive him”
Today, I am very grateful and blown away by Erika Kirk’s courageous act of forgiveness towards her husband’s murderer. She proclaimed forgiveness to millions at Charlie Kirk’s memorial — a beautiful picture of true Christianity! I pray her words impact countless hearts, to the core.
If a widow of just 11 days, with a shattered heart, can forgive the 22 year old man who took her husband from her and her children for the remainder of their earthly lives — what can we each forgive today to make more room for peace, love, and grace in our own hearts?!
Forgive means: to for-give, it is a gift. The greatest gift is for the forgiver — freedom from resentment, bitterness, anger and offense. In the days and years ahead, Erika will still face deep loss and pain, working through different levels of forgiveness with her Savior’s help. But it started with her proclaiming forgiveness — giving the pain and anger to God, over and over again, until she’s completely free of the unbearable burden of her husband’s murder. Please continue to pray for Erika and her beautiful children often, as the years go on.
Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV) For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV) Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
